For 21 years before NASCAR started selling naming rights in 1971, its top stock-car racing championship was known as the Grand National, and the name lingered in public usage long after the series. In 1975 NASCAR founder Bill France asked IMSA and the FIA to create a class for stock cars in their series, and in particular the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Holman and Moody built this car at France's suggestion specifically for those two races. The 1975 NASCAR Grand National Winston Cup Series was the 27th season of professional stock car racing in the United States and the 4th modern era NASCAR Cup series. The season began on Sunday, January 19 and ended on Sunday, November 12.
